About Company

Bangor Natural Gas Company is a regulated public utility providing efficient, reliable, low cost natural gas to the Greater Bangor area. In 1998, soon after receiving approval from the Maine Public Utilities Commission to serve the public as a natural gas distributor, Bangor Natural Gas launched construction of the piping system that connects its Bangor area customers to the U.S. portion of the Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline. At Bangor Natural Gas, we are proud to join the more than 1,200 distribution companies currently bringing the benefits of safe, reliable, low cost natural gas to some 175 million Americans in all 50 states.

NATURAL GAS DELIVERY

A network of underground piping connects Bangor Gas customers to the U.S. portion of the Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline. The network transports more than 530 billion British Thermal Units (BTU) of energy per day from the Sable Island gas fields off Nova Scotia.  In many cases, we lay pipes by the cut-and-bore method, in which we dig an access hole on the side of the street, drill an underground passageway, and insert the piping, all without disrupting the surface. For streets where a larger pipe is necessary or subsurface conditions dictate, we dig a narrow trench, lay pipes, backfill the trench, compact the soil, and restore the surface.  With state-of-the-art construction, we can complete the piping in front of your home in a matter of hours; in some cases, it may take as much as a day. Modern techniques often mean little or no disruption to your driveway whatsoever.

WHY NATURAL GAS?

  • Natural gas is convenient and reliable. Gas flows to your home or business through a system of underground pipelines. There are no tanks to monitor, no waiting for delivery trucks, no risk of storms interrupting service, no worries about running out of fuel.

  • Natural gas burns clean. In a report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a high-efficiency natural gas heating system emitted far less pollution and soot, compared to a high-efficiency oil-fired system. So your home—and the air you and your family breathe—stays cleaner.

  • Natural gas is efficient. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the most efficient natural gas furnace has an efficiency rating of 97 percent, while the most efficient oil furnace has a rating of 89 percent. Natural gas gives you more energy for your dollar, so there’s less waste.

  • Natural gas is safe. Properly installed and used, all major types of energy are safe. But it’s important to note that natural gas produces about half as much carbon monoxide as does oil when burned. And, because it’s lighter than air, it dissipates quickly in the unlikely event of a leak.
