SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has launched a two-year renewable energy training programme aimed at building additional capacities in Pacific Island counties.

The programme is being funded by Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) and led by UAE-headquartered Masdar-a leading international player in renewable energy development. The initiative woks on the training programme developed by Masdar and implemented in collaboration with delivery partners from Australia and New Zealand.

As part of the initiative, a workshop was being held in Suva, Fiji during end-October this year, which was attended by 25 representatives from 11 Pacific Island countries that have already received the benefits of the fund to implement renewable energy projects. The participating countries included Fiji, the Federated States of Micronesia and Palau, Kiribati, Nauru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

According to ADFD, a second workshop is scheduled to be held during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in January, ahead of the IRENA General Assembly. The workshop intends to offer high-level professional training to expert participants from beneficiary countries in the Pacific Island. In addition, a third session is scheduled to be held in October 2018. This session will offer guidance on renewable energy project planning to technical managers.

The training programme aims to provide delegates with more knowledge and insight and is expected to help the Pacific Island countries in unlocking their wind and solar potential. Further, it offers significant cost savings by way of reducing these countries’ excessive dependence on expensive diesel fuel.
