New York City Unveils Massive Solar Panel Project

December 01, 2017 06:30:31 AM | Renewable Energy

The BMCC solar array is capable of producing over 1,000 kWh of electricity every day, which in turn will help the college to save more than $42,000 per annum on power bill.

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): New York City has unveiled its largest solar photovoltaic facility at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). The project implemented in partnership with the New York Power Authority’s Energy Services Program is part of City’s efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Further, the project is expected to help New York State to meet its ambitious goal to supply 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

The facility consists of 947 solar energy panels on the main roof of BMCC buildings. The 327 W 5 x3 foot panels are hung vertically on the cooling tower enclosure walls and flat on the western lower roof. The project, initially proposed in 2008, is considered to be largest solar photovoltaic facility in Manhattan. In addition, it is also the first vertical solar facility in the entire New York City.

The BMCC solar array is capable of producing over 1,000 kWh of electricity every day, which in turn will help the college to save more than $42,000 per annum on power bill. Further, the project is expected to result in reduction in emission of nearly 25,000 gallons of greenhouse gases. The electricity generated from the solar panels will be used to power the Chambers Street buildings. Excess electricity, if any, would be distributed to the New York City power grid.

Since 2012, BMCC has reported almost 20% reduction in energy consumption through various initiatives including insulation and greening of roofs, installing LED lights and motion sensors in classrooms and public spaces. Installation of solar panels is considered to be the latest in its efforts to promote sustainability and energy-efficiency practices.
