Kansas AG Cleared to Take Part in Natural Gas Price Hearings

Kansas Gas, Black Hills, and Atmos are working with the KCC to come up with customer payment plans to help the companies recover costs from the higher gas rates.

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The Kansas Corporation Commission approved Attorney General Derek Schmidt’s request to take part in investigations of unusually high natural gas bills seen during record low temperatures in February.

Kansas Gas, Black Hills, and Atmos are working with the KCC to come up with customer payment plans to help the companies recover costs from the higher gas rates. The KCC wants to make sure this is done in a way that doesn’t suddenly hit customers with huge bills. Schmidt’s office has been looking into whether or not the sudden spike in gas rates violated any laws.

“While our jurisdictional responsibilities are distinct, the KCC and Attorney General have a good track record of working together on behalf of Kansas customers. I welcome the AG’s participation in these proceedings to support its ongoing investigations,” said Commission Chair Andrew French.

Since Schmidt’s intervention was approved, he will have access to all documents filed, have the ability to file testimony, question witnesses and participate in any scheduled proceedings.
