The top five U.S purchasers of renewable energy are Google, Amazon, Apple, the US Department of Defense and Microsoft.

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Google has achieved its goal to source 100% of its global energy consumption from renewable sources.

Sam Arons, head of Google’s energy and infrastructure group announced that the company has become the world’s largest corporate buyer of renewable energy by bringing its total purchases to 3,186 megawatts (MW), by adding additional 535 MW to its renewable energy capacity. Out of the 3,186 MW, 2400 MW will be purchased in the US and the remaining 786 MW by its European and Asian operations.

As per the company, it has signed long-term agreements with AVANGRID Renewables, an Iberdrola subsidiary towards supply of additional 535 MW of energy. Under the terms of the agreement, Google will be supplied with 98 MW each of power from Coyote Ridge and Tatanka Ridge wind farms in South Dakota. Also wind farms in Iowa and Oklahoma will supply energy of 200 MW and 138.6 MW respectively. Gary Demasi, Google’s director of global infrastructure noted that renewable energy supplied from new sources will continue to bring value to its global business.

According to sources, the Coyote Ridge and Tatanka Ridge wind farms in South Dakota are under development. The Oklahoma project is expected to become operational in early-2018, whereas the Iowa project is scheduled to become online in 2019.

The top five U.S purchasers of renewable energy are Google, Amazon, Apple, the US Department of Defense and Microsoft. Amazon has already entered into purchase agreements worth nearly 1,219 MW in the US. Microsoft had recently signed an agreement for 180 MW of power with a Netherlands wind farm project.
