In addition, BP will have to report the number of vessel calls and the volume of crude oil handled at the terminal each year.

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The modified permit issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would require BP to limit the volume of crude oil handled at its Cherry Point terminal to 191 million barrels per year.

Further, the company would be prohibited from handling crude oil at its north wing dock unless authorized to do so. It must be noted that environmental groups have filed a suit against functioning of north wing dock, citing that it may lead to increased shipping traffic. The groups alleged that the originally approved permit potentially violated the Magnuson Amendment. The groups have long been demanding environment impact statement (EIS) from the company, which was finally released in end-August last year.

In addition, BP will have to report the number of vessel calls and the volume of crude oil handled at the terminal each year.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has modified the permit, originally issued in 1996, in order to comply with the Magnuson Amendment’s restrictions regarding the handling of crude oil at Puget Sound facilities, the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and other legal requirements. This is the only way in which it can ensure that the restrictions are followed, noted Andrew Munoz, spokesperson, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
