Unusually Strong Natural Gas Odor Reported in South Point, Ohio

SEATTLE (Oil Monster):Some Columbia Gas customers in South Point have reported an unusually strong smell of natural gas, the South Point mayor’s office says on Thursday.

The odor is coming from mercaptan, a chemical added to natural gas to provide its distinctive smell. Natural gas alone is odorless.

According to the mayor’s office, a service technician is inspecting the issue. Anyone with concerns may call Columbia Gas at 800-344-4077.
