Eurostat Posted 13% Dip in EU Natural Gas Demand

On the contrary, Ireland and Malta turned out to be the only countries to record increase in demand.

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): According to latest figures published by the European Union (EU) statistics agency Eurostat, the inland demand for natural gas in the EU region registered a decline by 13.2% in 2022 to total 13.72 million terajoules. This is the third lowest yearly total since 2008.

The leading EU natural gas consumers in 2022 were Germany, Italy and France. All the above three countries recorded substantial decline in demand. The inland natural gas demand in Germany totalled 3.07 million terajoules, down significantly by 15.4% from 2021. The Italian demand, at 2.61 million terajoules, slumped by almost 10% year-on-year. The demand in France was down by 9.6% at 1.54 million terajoules.

On the contrary, Ireland and Malta turned out to be the only countries to record increase in demand. The natural gas demand in Ireland and Malta increased by 2.1% and 1.4% respectively, in 2022.

The total EU imports of natural gas declined by 6.6% from 24.67 million terajoules in 2021 to 23.05 million terajoules in 2022. The major sources of import were Norway and Russia, which accounted for 24.4% and 15.3% respectively, of the total natural gas entering the EU. The other major suppliers were the U.S., Algeria and Qatar, Eurostat said
