MetSpec

Unit 10-11 , Lendal Court, Gamble Street, United Kingdom |

From our factory in Nottingham, England, MetSpec manufacture and hand build a unique range of instrument shelters and radiation shields. Established in 1998, we have a strong and growing reputation for supplying very high quality and innovative products. All MetSpec products are manufactured to marine specifications and are becoming an industry standard. We are highly flexible in our approach, and customise our products to maximise the benefits to our customers.

Our range of instrument shelters is the answer for the replacement of wooden screens in synoptic and climatological networks, and for many other applications. Offering relatively low cost and low maintenance, and ending the nightmare of continual painting and repair. We offer full design and customisation of the interior layout, for the installation of thermometers, sensors, thermographs and loggers. A variety of instrument shelter support stands are available, for mounting into the ground, onto concrete, or onto existing frames.
Our radiation shields have been fully tested and give much better overall performance with less errors. Available with vertical, horizontal and top down mounting options, and to accommodate the smallest and largest sensors.

Our customers

Our customer base is growing and MetSpec products are in use all around the world. Much of our recent growth in sales has been due to recommendations from existing customers. Ask for references and customer experiences.

Unaspirated Radiation Shields

Radiation Shields

Metspec Radiation Shields have an innovative design to reduce overheating
when solar radiation is high and wind speed is low. This is also effective in the
winter when the sun's angle is low or there is reflection off snow.
The design of the shield has a white outer reflective surface combined with an
inner barrier of non-reflective, black louvres. This prevents sunlight and
reflected radiation reaching the sensor whilst still allowing air to flow across the
sensor. This design is based on the Metspec Stevenson Screen which is now
established as an industry standard and sold to National Meteorological
Services worldwide.
Trials carried out over the past year have confirmed that errors under adverse
conditions are typically half those compared to similar shields.

Key Features

Accuracy in trials comparable to Stevenson Screens
Less sensitive to rainfall events
Improved protection against wind blown precipitation due to larger interior size
Secure sensor installation with stable mounting mechanism
Tough and durable UV stable plastic
No power required

Accuracy

Typical solar heating errors:
In conditions of high solar radiation and wind speeds less than 1 m/s the readings were compared with an
aspirated shield.

RAD 01 Small version: +0.75C
RAD 02 Large version: +0.5C

A detailed report on the trial is available from Metspec.
Specifications
Double louvred high impact polycarbonate
White external layer, with UV stabiliser for long-term weather resistance
Extra black internal layer
Aluminium arm with durable white powder coating
A4 grade (316), stainless steel 'U' bolt, and securing nuts to fit a pole of between 25-51mm diameter
