Balancing the increasing demand for energy with economic and environmentally friendly ways to access that energy is no easy task. Reaching unconventional energy sources is even more complicated. Independent Energy Partners, Inc. (IEP) is solving both issues with their breakthrough in-situ Geothermic Fuel Cell™ (GFC) combined heat and power technology system. Aiming to improve a current process resulted in innovation that dramatically lowers the cost of oil and natural gas recovery from oil shale, coal and a variety of other unconventional hydrocarbon resources, including shut-in oil fields, tar sands and heavy oil deposits, while producing ‘green’ baseload electricity as a byproduct. The environmental benefits of IEP’s GFC method are compelling when compared to other retorting, strip mining, energy- and water-consuming techniques that have been attempted for unconventional oil recovery. IEP holds exclusive rights to broad, patented GFC technology in the U.S. and Canada.

Our Denver, Colorado headquarters is an ideal energy hub for conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon resources in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.

Our Mission

Independent Energy Partners, Inc. makes possible the economic and environmentally responsible recovery of unconventional hydrocarbon resources utilizing its patented Geothermic Fuel Cell technology. Application of GFCs will provide a means for the United States to develop its vast unconventional domestic resources, achieving reduced reliance on imported oil and result in enhanced energy, economic and national security for our country.

Social Responsibility

  • Economically and responsibly produced energy in and for the USA
  • Environmentally sound technology
  • Applications for restoring a healthy environment as well as energy production

Independent Energy Partners understands the paradox of employing clean technology in the unconventional hydrocarbon business. We are working very hard to make our clean, sustainable technology the industry standard. It will not happen overnight, but we have already taken great strides and are poised for near term success in both our business and social responsibility mission.

Economic Energy to Sustain Quality of Life

It will take every viable energy strategy to meet future energy demands and meet our national goal of energy independence. Energy prices directly impact our quality of life. Lower energy costs mean business can operate more efficiently, keeping Americans employed and their local communities prosperous. Our geothermic fuel cell system helps oil and gas companies access more existing unconventional hydrocarbons efficiently, economically and with minimal environmental disturbance.

Reducing Reliance on Foreign Oil

IEP is developing its patented technology, the GFC™ Process, to produce quality, light synthetic crude from oil shale and other hydrocarbon resources. The company has been issued patents in the United States and Canada that provide comprehensive protection for its intellectual property rights in the GFC™ Process. In addition to recovery of oil and gas from vast domestic oil shale deposits, the Company believes that its process has applications in other in-situ applications: coal gasification, tar sands, unrecovered conventional oil, other heavy oils (diatomite, black wax) and coalbed methane.

It has become clear that the U.S., currently importing more than 60% of its oil requirements, needs to reduce its reliance on imported oil. Former President George W. Bush formally declared that energy independence is a matter of national security for the United States. Implicit in this statement is the call for an unrelenting and accelerating national effort to develop all domestic oil resources as fully as possible in the immediate future – including unconventional resources, such as oil shale and other heavy oil resources.

Fortunately, the world is rich in unconventional oil supplies, with over 6 trillion barrels estimated globally. Much of the world’s supply of unconventional oil is found in North America. Most notably, this includes the Green River Formation in Western Colorado, Eastern Utah and Southern Wyoming – the largest oil shale resource in the world. Containing over 1.7 trillion barrels of oil, the Green River Formation alone represents the equivalent of approximately 200 years of U.S. oil demand at current levels. In addition, the U.S. has vast coal resources, with over 500 billion tons of proven reserves which, when utilized with coal-to-liquid technologies, would provide a variety of liquid hydrocarbon fuel products.

Environmentally Sound

It takes energy to make energy. Our GFC system bypasses the need for coal or gas-fired electricity from a distant utility. Once running, the system produces oil , gas and surplus fuel for its own operation and will generates surplus baseload green electrical power that can be sold back to utility companies or other commercial customers.

Given that the GFC technology is an in-situ, electrochemical process, with minimal air emissions and uses little water all of this is accomplished with minimal environmental impact and a small carbon foot print.
