The foundation for Sommers Oil Company began in 1973, when two brothers – Jackie Sommers and Jimmy Sommers – began selling Gulf gas through two dispensers at their KOA campground just south of Savannah, Georgia. The energy crisis of the early 1970s had a significant impact on the country’s economy. But, in hindsight it was also the catalyst for Sommers Oil Company. As a new Gulf Dealer, we experienced the anxieties and pitfalls of supply shortages in a crisis market. We then envisioned a supply chain that would guarantee that no customer would run out of fuel.

By 1977, we were on the way to realizing that vision as we became a wholesale distributor and hauler to customers throughout the state. Today, we are the premier wholesaler of gas and petroleum products in the Southeast, serving as direct distributors for BP, Shell, Marathon, Sunoco and more than a dozen major suppliers. We also franchise and have imaged hundreds of C-Stores and gas stations with our own distinctive trademarked brand: El Cheapo. In addition, we serve as a common freight carrier and transport gas and petroleum products in three states through a separate company named Southeastern Fuel Transport.

From dealer to jobber to wholesaler, our origins begin with the retail side of the business: branding, pricing, merchandising, maintenance and environmental considerations. We have accumulated a wealth of knowledge in the past 35 years, focusing first on the end customer and with emphasis on creating a value-driven retail experience. Today we are involved in the operations of more than 40 retail sites. Having built dozens of locations from the ground up, we can share our knowledge on how to choose site locations, work with county and state regulatory agencies, acquiring permits, site layout and development, choosing tanks, pumps and monitoring equipment, evaluating brands and ongoing review of pricing structures.
