TOP TIER™ is recognized as a premier fuel performance specification developed and enforced by leading automotive and heavy duty equipment manufacturers. The intention of TOP TIER™ is to create a winning situation for retailers, auto manufacturers, and drivers.  Vehicle and equipment manufacturer sponsors have a specification by which they can drive market fuel improvements to meet the ever changing demands of engine technology when regulations or specifications may not go far enough.

TOP TIER™ Detergent Gasoline was first introduced in 2004 when a group of automakers recognized the need for a higher detergency gasoline standard than that required by regulation.

When the U.S. minimum additive performance standards were first established in 1995, many gasoline marketers reduced the concentration of detergent additive in market gasoline by up to 50%. As a result, many automakers experienced instances of deposit build up within engines leading to poor performance and sometimes engine damage, both resulting in dissatisfied customers.

Lower quality can build deposits

Fuels with lower-quality additive packages can build up deposits on fuel injectors and on intake valves. Others can build up deposits in combustion chambers and may lead to intake valve sticking. These lower levels of additives can have negative impacts on engine performance and vehicle responsiveness.

Improves Fuel Stability

Oxidation can cause fuel to take on increased water which can lead to fuel filter plugging and ultimately peroxide, acid, and gum formation, breaking down elastomeric seals or causing deposits and corrosion damage. TOP TIER™ Diesel Fuel specifies higher oxidation stability than ASTM requirements for biodiesel fuels.

Cleaner Diesel Fuel

Proper filtration will reduce fuel contamination and maintain optimal performance for power & fuel economy while also reducing unplanned maintenance for consumers as related to fuel filters, fuel pumps, and fuel injectors.  Water is a leading cause of corrosion in vehicle fuel systems and contributes to risks for microbial growth, reduced lubricity, and other issues. Controlling water as specified in the TOP TIER™ diesel housekeeping requirements will reduce unplanned maintenance for consumers and help maintain optimal engine performance.
