Living With Propane

Propane plays an important role in our everyday lives. It is an efficient energy source for heating and cooking and is widely used in manufacturing and agriculture. Propane is delivered to tanks outside our homes by truck and travels from the tank to our homes by underground pipes. Like any fuel, it must be handled and used with safety and care.  Propane is a liquid hydrocarbon that vaporizes into a colorless, odorless, highly flammable gas. In properly maintained and operated systems, propane is completely safe. However, it can be extremely dangerous if an uncontrolled release of propane occurs. In order to detect an uncontrolled release or leak of propane, an odorant (ethyl mercaptan) is added. This odorant give propane an unpleasant smell like rotten eggs, a skunks spray or a dead animal.

Transporting Small Cylinders

• Always transport and store a cylinder in a secure and upright position so it will not fall, shift or roll
• Always close the cylinder valve and, if required, seal with plug, even if the cylinder is empty. Ask if a plug is needed
• Never keep a filled cylinder inside a hot vehicle or transport inside a closed truck
• Always place the cylinder in a well-ventilated area of the vehicle
• Always proceed directly to your destination and immediately remove the cylinder from your vehicle
• There is a limit placed by law on the number of cylinders that can be transported in closed-bodied vehicles such as passenger cars and vans. Ask us for more information on state and local codes in place to help keep you safe
