MINING

Borehole logging for mining applications can provided much clarity and precise answers to formation evaluation and economic feasibility studies.  From a simple natural gamma ray to define tops and bottom of strata, density, sonic or neutron porosity, multiple resistivity with induced polarization, magnetic susceptibility and sophisticated borehole imaging using acoustic, dipmeter , micro-resistivity and optical televiewer tools.  Mine geologists working in coal fields, iron ore deposits, uranium mining, rare earth elements, and other metallic minerals use Century Multi-Parameters tools to log these boreholes and develop surface, underground and in-situ leaching mines on a daily basis.

  • 7201 Spectral Gamma Tool - Spectral Gamma Ray, measurement of K, U, T with a 256 full spectrum analyzer of the radiation energy levels. Used in Mining applications for Potash, Uranium, and Rare Elements Resources

  • 9012 Natural Gamma Tool - Gross gamma ray tool, with detector on the bottom of the tool. Used in surface mining applications to define tops and bottoms of formations. Small size and weight allows blast hole logging of many holes per day. Can also be equipped with a source adapter to record an omni-directional density

  • 9057 Multi-parameter E-Log Neutron Logging Tool - Multi-parameter tool combining electric logs, gamma ray, neutron porosity and borehole deviation in single pass of the borehole. Used in mining applications and water well logging programs where neutron porosity is required.

  • 9238 Logging Tool - The classic “coal logging tool” combines 4 measurements required to define formation quality and thickness. The density is most valuable for the geologist, and with the caliper, gamma and focused guard resivistivty, the borehole is well represented to determine mine feasibility and formation characteristics.

  • 9239 Compensated Density Logging Tool - The industry standard compensated density tool adds a second density detector to record the CDL-Bulk density of the formation. Used extensively in coal mining, and for iron ore applications the Cs137 source is replaced with Co60 source, which allows much higher density measurement ranges. Similar to the above tool, options for natural gamma, guard resistivity, and PE Density.

  • 9512 Slim Hole Induction Tool - The slim hole induction measuring tool is used in PVC cased hole, and air filled holes where traditional electric logs cannot be obtained. The tool can also be used in highly conductive formations such as iron, nickel and rare earths to further classify these formations.

  • 9622 Series Magnetic Susceptibility Tool - The magnetic susceptibility logging tool is primarily used in metals mining projects, where its slim diameter is useful in obtaining magnetic data. Tool can be used with or without the deviation package.

  • 9650 Series Induced Polarized Logging Tool - The induced polarization tool is another metals mining tool, used to record the IP measurement and electric logs. Chargeability of the formation is useful for detecting sulfides and other magnetic minerals.

  • 9702 Natural Gamma / Deviation Tool - The deviation only tool uses magnetic deviation sensors to measure tool angle and direction, to determine the borehole orientation or drift.

OIL AND GAS

Determination of production of hydro-carbons has long been an important use of borehole geophysical logging.  Centurys Express Stack tools combine these most important logging tools in a single run of the well, with gamma ray, caliper, density – neutron porosity, spontaneous potential, shallow-medium and deep induction resistivity.  Other logs can be combined to include borehole deviation, sonic velocity, and micro-resistivity measurements.  The tools with a smaller 2.5 inch diameter than most of the major suppliers, allow access to smaller diameter exploration holes.  The complete triple combo stack is 45 feet in length and weighs 250 pounds.  The 4000 Series Express Stack Tools are open logging tools for determining formation porosities and a resistivity logging suite.  It can distinguish between sandstone, limestone, dolomite, shale, and other rock types.

  • 4000 – Telemetry and Natural Tool

  • 4175 – Compensated Dual Neutron Porosity

  • 4339 – Pad Mounted, Compensated Density

  • 4702 – Deviation Section or Isolation Sub

  • 4841 – Dual Induction and Shallow Resistivity

GEOTECHNICAL

Understanding the rock mechanics of the formations for building tunnels, dams, buildings and road construction is important for engineers to design effective and safe improvements to our infrastructure around the world.  Centurys tools are designed to evaluate important geophysical and structural details of boreholes, such as fractures, bedding plans and faults.  Acoustic and Optical imaging gives precise location and dip analysis of these structures so that detailed descriptions of the formation can be utilized to access and design properly engineered structures.  Sonic velocity tools and formation density tools are used to calculate rock mechanics using industry acceptable standards.

  • 9074 Three Arm Caliper Logging Tool - Three arm caliper tool and gamma ray. Additional options included casing collar locator, temperature, fluid resistivity measurements, and borehole deviation. Useful in both open holes to measure hole size and volume and in cased holes to locate screens, perforations, and other casing features.

  • 9320 Full Wave Sonic Tool - Full wave sonic velocity is used to measure acoustic travel time of the formations. Combined with density measurements, Rock Strength parameters are calculated for engineering parameters useful in mining development. Additional receivers and spacing selections can be modified.

  • 9057 Multiparameter E-Log Neutron Logging Tool - Multi-parameter tool combining electric logs, gamma ray, neutron porosity and borehole deviation in single pass of the borehole. Used in mining applications and water well logging programs where neutron porosity is required.

  • 9412 Dipmeter Tool - The dipmeter tool combines of borehole deviation, X-Y hole size, and 4 pad micro- resistivity to measure strata dip and direction. High resolution recordings give precise structural information to the mining geologist and engineer. Used primarily in mining, but also used in oil/gas wells.

  • 9415 Micro-Imaging Tool - The micro-imaging tool uses 144 micro-resistivity imaging buttons to “see” the borehole wall environment. Similar to the dipmeter measurement, dip and direction of the formations can be determined from the borehole imaging data.

  • 9722 E-M Flowmeter - The EM flowmeter is used in mining, geotechnical, and environmental applications. The flowmeter has no moving parts, using a sensor developed by the TVA, flow is measured using Faradays Law of Induction. Can be run both in trolling or in stationary modes.

  • 9804 Series Acoustic Televiewer Tool - Another borehole imaging tool, the acoustic televiewer tool uses sounds waves to image the borehole wall. Primarily used for structural analysis of formations and orientation of fractures. Used in mining, geotechnical, and environmental applications.

CUSTOM

Centurys staff effectively designs and builds almost any desired logging tool.  The “Super Tool” combines a traditional compensated density and borehole deviation tool into one tool – saving rig time and time in the hole.  We have also combined the X-Y caliper and deviation tool to evaluate large diameter water wells to record the “Well Profile”.  For open and cased hole sonic velocity tools, Century has 2, 3, or 4 receiver tools available, with receiver spacings configurable for expected use.  Adding the Photo Electric Density measurement to the slim hole compensated density is also available.  For cased holes – an ultra slim-line dual density and neutron tools used for evaluation through steel drill pipe where borehole conditions are not good for open hole logging.

  • 9415 Micro-Imaging Tool - The micro-imaging tool uses 144 micro-resistivity imaging buttons to “see” the borehole wall environment. Similar to the dipmeter measurement, dip and direction of the formations can be determined from the borehole imaging data.

  • 9445 Tool - The well geometry tool combines X-Y caliper, borehole deviation and natural gamma. Used in mining applications where stress measurements and hole ovality are required. For large diameter water wells, this tool also provides better hole size measurement ranges.

  • 9722 E-M Flowmeter - Used in the environmental and hydrology industries to measure fluid movement in a borehole. The instrument measures flow rates using the principal of Faradays Law of Induction. The downhole probe consists of an electromagnet and two electrodes located 180 degrees apart and 90 degrees to the magnetic field inside of a hollow cylinder. The voltage induced by a conductor moving at right angles through the magnetic field is directly proportional to the velocity of the conductor (water) through the field.
