DECADES OF SAFE, COST-EFFECTIVE OPERATIONS.

Frank E. Taplin established the company in 1913 as a regional coal sales brokerage in Cleveland, Ohio. Since then, we have evolved to embrace emerging markets and opportunities. But what has never changed, and never will, is that we always deliver the most integrated, customer-focused and cost-effective solutions. More than 100 years later, our founder would be proud.

WE EMPOWER OUR PEOPLE WITH DIGNITY. AND RESPECT.

We feel very fortunate to have attracted some of the most talented professionals in the industry. Most have been with us for a very long time. We think that’s because a culture of dignity and respect runs through every level of our business. This helps foster a can-do attitude that allows us to deliver the most cost-effective, integrated solutions to our customers.

Metal/Non-Metal Mining

We are the largest lignite producer in the U.S., operating mines with annual production levels ranging from a few hundred thousand tons per year to more than 10 million.  Our services are comprehensive. We specialize in reserve evaluation, permitting, mine planning, operation and final reclamation – and everything in between. We are your solution-based partners.

North American Operations

North American operates 10 surface coal mines and 18 limestone quarries, delivering more than 38.5 million tons of coal and 46 million tons of limestone in 2018. We operate more draglines than anyone else in the U.S. (nearly 50), and control 161,000 surface acres, 1.9 billion tons of coal and mineral interests on more than 24,000 gross acres in active oil and gas plays.
