Renewable Energy

A REC (Renewable Energy Certificate) is created when a megawatt-hour (MWh) of clean energy is generated and added to the power grid.  RECs are the property rights to the non-energy, environmental attributes (primarily the absence of carbon dioxide or CO2) that are derived from generating electricity using a clean, renewable fuel as opposed to a fossil fuel. The electricity goes into the grid, the environmental attributes are bundled and sold, and the owner of the REC can legally claim to have purchased renewable energy.  SmartEnergy buys Renewable Energy Certificates produced by wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal facilities located in the United States.
