New Jerseys Clean Energy Program

New Jersey's Clean Energy Program (NJCEP) promotes increased energy efficiency and the use of clean, renewable sources of energy including solar, wind, geothermal, and sustainable biomass. The results for New Jersey are a stronger economy, less pollution, lower costs, and reduced demand for electricity. NJCEP offers financial incentives, programs, and services for residential, commercial, and municipal customers.

Governance & Stakeholder Participation 

In 2003, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) established the Office of Clean Energy to administer New Jersey's Clean Energy Program. Representatives from government and industry, energy experts, public interest groups, and academicians helped establish stakeholder groups to engage parties in NJCEP's development and provide input to the BPU regarding the design, budgets, objectives, goals, administration, and evaluation of New Jersey's Clean Energy Program. Stakeholder meetings are open to the public and all are invited to participate.

Renewable Energy

• All solar projects must be registered under the SREC Registration Program (SRP) in order to earn Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs). SRECs represent all the clean energy benefits of electricity generated from a solar energy project. SRECs can be sold or traded separately from the power, providing owners a source of revenue to help offset the cost of installation. Learn more about SRECs and how they are generated.  Please be aware that to conform with the Clean Energy Act of 2018 signed on May 23, 2018, the Board has adopted rules to close the SREC Registration Program to new registrants upon the state solar electricity generation's attainment of 5.1% of retail electricity sales. A copy of the rule adoption is provided.
• Make sure your home or building is as energy efficient as possible before installing solar. Benefits include: improved comfort and safety, lower energy bills, less renewable capacity needed, and lower upfront cost to install renewable energy.  Businesses should take advantage of the free Benchmarking services provided by New Jersey's Clean Energy Program to discover where there are opportunities to save on energy before installing solar.
• It is also a best practice when considering solar to check with your local Electric Distribution Company (EDC) about the capability of the electric distribution circuit serving your home or business. Many of the EDCs have maps on their website showing whether your local distribution circuit can handle additional solar interconnections.
