North Atlantic Refining

North Atlantic Refining Limited is a crude oil refinery located in Come By Chance, in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It has a refinery capacity of 130,000 barrels per day. At North Atlantic Refining, we don’t have a work force. We have a community that’s more than 600 strong.  We are investing in the environment, with emissions reductions of 21% since 2008 and emissions intensity reduced 25% over that time, and safety, with 2.5 million person hours without a lost time injury, to ensure that our social license to operate continues to be awarded. At North Atlantic Refining our energy efficiency and safety have never been better. The recent process improvements and the efforts of our health, safety, and environment teams are our focus as they will lead us into a prosperous future.

Our employees come from the towns surrounding the refinery and from all over the world. They are operators, engineers, craftspeople, managers, and drivers. They are also scout leaders, education mentors, and healthcare volunteers. Our highly skilled employees transform crude oil into some of the cleanest fuels on the world market. It’s a job that requires the greatest care and safety. Safety training and performance at NARL Refining is second to none – it’s a culture.

OUR STORY

The refinery was built for the future and those innovations have been of great benefit. In the early 1970s, when the refinery was founded, oil was plentiful and easy to recover, so installing clean fuel technology and one of North America’s largest refinery docks seemed unnecessary. However, as environmental stringency has continued to increase and ships have grown, NARL has been able to respond to these new demands with great reward.  Since 2014 we have experienced a renewed commitment to excellence through our new ownership group and have increased our nameplate oil processing capacity from 115,000 to 130,000 barrels per day in 2016.
