Hydrogen House Project

26 Snydertown Rd , Hopewell, New Jersey, United States | Fuel Cells

The Hydrogen House Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to education and the pursuit of clean and renewable energy technologies.  The organization was founded by inventor Mike Strizki in 2011.  Strizki gained international notoriety in 2006 when he converted his home in Hopewell, New Jersey, to run exclusively on solar and hydrogen power.  With grants from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, as well as his own personal funds, Strizki was able to complete the Hydrogen House, the first solar-hydrogen residence in North America.  Strizki has since offered educational tours of his home to show how effective the system is at providing clean, safe, renewable energy.  His house is completely off the grid, and the only byproducts of his system are chemically pure water and medical grade oxygen.  The Hydrogen House Project plans to move forward with Strizki's research and development efforts in the renewable energy sector, investigating practical applications for solar, hydrogen, fuel cells and other clean energy technologies.  Side-by-side with these research efforts, the organization will educate the public through guided tours of the Hydrogen House, presentations, student internships, and events.  The Hydrogen House Project is an effort to finally rid the world of the economic, social, and environmental injustices of fossil fuels.  With your help, we can push forward clean and renewable solutions to meet the world's growing energy demand.  Our organization accepts both cash and equipment donations, all of which are directed toward furthering the Hydrogen House Project's mission.

WHY HYDROGEN?

Hydrogen is the first element on the Periodic Table of Elements and is comprised of a single proton and a single electron.  It is literally the fuel that powers the sun and is the most abundant element in the universe.  While hydrogen gas (H2) is rare on earth, it can be extracted by various means from chemical compounds such as water (H2O) and ammonia (NH3).  One of the most common ways to extract hydrogen is with a device called an electrolyzer, which passes an electrical current through water, splitting apart the hydrogen and oxygen atoms.  These two gases can then be stored for various uses.  Hydrogen is an energy storage medium similar to a battery, but unlike batteries, which eventually lose their ability to hold a charge, hydrogen gas can be stored indefinitely.   Perhaps the best argument in hydrogen's favor is that when it is burned for heat, or passed through a fuel cell to make electricity, the only byproduct is chemically pure water.   When integrated with renewable energies like solar and wind power, hydrogen can offer a superior energy storage alternative to batteries with the added benefit of chemically pure water and oxygen as the only byproducts.
