How Does Geothermal Heating Work?

Geothermal renewable energy draws upon the Earth’s consistent temperature. Yes, the average Greater Covington air temperature ranges from 16Ëš to 89Ëš throughout the year with peaks and valleys that can result in 100+Ëš days in the heat of Summer and sub-zero days in the dead of Winter.  However, the Earth absorbs almost 50% of all solar energy and about 4 to 6 feet below the surface, and the temperature remains relatively moderate and consistent all year, about 50ËšF to 70°F depending on geographic location.  The geothermal utilizes an underground loop system that stays at this temperature. Energy exchanged between the earth and your home provides heating and cooling.  In Summer, the system reverses and expels heat from your home to the cooler Earth via the loop system. This heat exchange process is not only natural but is a truly ingenious and highly efficient way to create a comfortable climate in your home.  In Winter, water circulating inside a sealed loop absorbs heat from the Earth and carries it to the unit. Here it is compressed to a higher temperature and sent as warm air to your indoor system for distribution throughout your home.
