Walden began development on the Big Level site in 2011 after signing a long-term lease with a large institutional landowner. The community was in need of economic development and strongly supported the project. Walden designed Big Level to accommodate modest wind speeds on site by maximizing MW capacity and deploying some of the tallest turbines installed in the US, with tip heights of 650 feet. Walden won a competitive process to sell the electricity to Microsoft via an innovative proxy generation swap. This contract brought strong benefits to both project owner and off- taker. Walden sold the project to an international utility.
