Ukraine Targets 14.6 BCM Gas Storage for 2026–27 Winter Amid Energy Security Concerns
SEATTLE (Oil Monster):Ukraine is targeting 14.6 billion cubic metres (bcm) of natural gas in underground storage ahead of the 2026–2027 heating season, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal announced, outlining a base-case scenario to ensure winter energy security.
Shmyhal noted that a minimum reserve of 13.2 bcm would be critically necessary, aligning with storage levels recorded before the previous heating season in October 2025. He cautioned that forecasts could change depending on the evolving security situation, with the upcoming winter expected to remain challenging.

State energy firm Naftogaz and the Gas Transmission System Operator are actively securing import capacity and working to extend the Vertical Gas Corridor, which enables Ukraine to receive liquefied natural gas (LNG) via terminals in Greece.
Ukraine had previously increased gas imports to around 24 million cubic metres per day following intensified attacks on domestic production. However, imports have declined since April 1 and are expected to remain subdued unless European gas prices fall.
Analysts estimate Ukraine ended the 2025–2026 heating season with 9.5 bcm in storage. Domestic production is expected to play a key role in meeting future demand, potentially reducing reliance on costly imports.
