Iraq Advances Plans for Basra-Baniyas Oil Pipeline

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Iraq is moving ahead with preparations for a major oil pipeline project aimed at improving the movement of crude and diversifying its export options. As part of a wider effort to strengthen its oil transportation network, the country is planning to advance the proposed Basra-Haditha-Kirkuk-Baniyas pipeline.

Nasir Aziz, Iraq’s Deputy Oil Minister for Extraction Affairs, recently led a meeting with an international investment group and officials from the Oil Ministry and its related companies. The consortium includes Chevron, Qatar, TI Capital and UCC.

Officials examined the project’s technical requirements, economic feasibility, and possible construction stages. The discussions also focused on identifying a practical way to implement the project and preparing a detailed roadmap based on technical and financial evaluations.

The proposed pipeline is considered strategically important because it could give Iraq greater flexibility in transporting crude to key export markets in the region. It could also reduce the country’s dependence on limited export routes and improve the long-term reliability of its crude shipments.

The latest meeting follows instructions from Iraq’s Prime Minister and Oil Minister to complete the studies and procedures needed to move the project toward implementation. Further technical and economic work will determine the project’s final structure and implementation plan.
