Egypt, Chevron Push Aphrodite Gas Link Toward FID
Egypt and Chevron are accelerating the technical, financial and commercial agreements needed to connect Cyprus’s Aphrodite gas field to Egyptian infrastructure as the project advances through front-end engineering and design toward a final investment decision.

MONTREAL (Oil Monster): Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi has discussed accelerating the agreements required to connect Cyprus’s Aphrodite natural gas field to Egyptian infrastructure as the project moves toward implementation.
Badawi held a videoconference with Javier La Rosa, Chevron’s President of Base Assets and Emerging Countries, alongside other company executives. The meeting also reviewed Chevron’s existing activities in Egypt and potential expansion in Mediterranean natural gas exploration.
Egypt and Chevron Push to Complete Remaining Agreements
Badawi called for closer coordination to finalize the project’s technical, financial and commercial frameworks, along with the associated timetable.
He said high-level political support for gas cooperation between Egypt and Cyprus is helping advance the remaining work needed to move the project forward.
The latest discussions come as Egypt and Chevron reach a previously targeted September 2026 deadline for finalizing the main agreements governing Aphrodite’s development, transportation and commercialization.
The latest public statements reviewed by OilMonster indicate that some of those frameworks were still being finalized as the deadline approached.
Aphrodite Is Already in FEED
The Aphrodite partners approved the start of front-end engineering and design in December 2025 under the field’s updated development plan.
The FEED program covers the production system and transmission infrastructure and carries an approved budget of approximately $106 million on a 100% project basis.
The approved development plan includes an independent floating production unit positioned above the reservoir and four production wells in the first phase.
The floating production system is designed for maximum output of approximately 800 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.

Gas Would Move to Egypt Through Subsea Pipeline
The development plan calls for Aphrodite gas to be exported through a subsea pipeline connected to Egypt’s gas-transmission system.
A government framework signed earlier in 2026 described a roughly 280-kilometre subsea connection to the Egyptian network in the Port Said area.
Engineering work has included the floating production unit, offshore pipelines and the broader gas transportation and processing system required to bring Aphrodite production into Egyptian infrastructure.
EGAS Positioned as Buyer of Aphrodite Gas
In April 2026, the Aphrodite partners and the Cyprus Hydrocarbons Company initialed a term sheet with the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company, or EGAS, covering the sale of all natural gas producible from the reservoir.
Under that framework, the project partners would also have an option to purchase a portion of the gas sold to EGAS in LNG form.
A Host Government Agreement was also initialed in connection with the transmission infrastructure needed offshore Egypt, covering the regulatory framework for construction, financing, operation and maintenance.
Project Still Requires Final Investment Decision
Despite progress on engineering and commercial arrangements, Aphrodite has not yet reached a final investment decision.
NewMed Energy has said the partners are working toward FID following completion of FEED and the remaining government, commercial and transmission arrangements.
Chevron describes Aphrodite as a field currently in development and holds a 35% operated interest in Block 12.
NewMed Energy holds 30%. Shell currently holds the remaining 35% interest through BG Cyprus, although Shell agreed in July 2026 to sell that interest to MOL Group, subject to regulatory approval and closing conditions.
Chevron Also Evaluating More Exploration in Egypt
The meeting also covered Chevron’s plans to expand natural gas exploration in Egypt, particularly in the Western Mediterranean.
Badawi said the petroleum sector would continue supporting international energy companies seeking to increase exploration, drilling and investment activity.
La Rosa reaffirmed Chevron’s commitment to its Egyptian activities and investments and to continued cooperation with the Petroleum Ministry and the company’s partners.
Aphrodite Adds to Egypt’s Eastern Mediterranean Gas Strategy
Connecting Aphrodite to Egyptian infrastructure is part of a broader strategy to use Egypt’s existing gas-processing and export system for Eastern Mediterranean discoveries.
Egypt is also working on links involving other Cypriot discoveries, including Cronos, while positioning its infrastructure as a processing and export route for regional gas.
For Aphrodite, completion of the remaining commercial and governmental arrangements will be an important step toward FID and eventual development.
