Dubai serves as Asia's primary benchmark due to its strategic location at the crossroads of major shipping routes, consistent quality from stable UAE production, and established trading relationships with Asian refiners. The Dubai Mercantile Exchange (DME) provides transparent price discovery, while the grade's medium-sour characteristics closely match the crude slate preferred by Asia's sophisticated refineries equipped for heavy processing.

Dubai's 2.04% sulfur content requires specialized desulfurization units, increasing refining costs by $3-5/bbl compared to sweet crudes. However, Asian refineries have invested heavily in hydroprocessing capacity specifically to capture the discount available on sour crudes. These complex refineries can extract higher value from Dubai's middle distillate yield (35-40%) while managing sulfur removal efficiently.
