SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Norway’s Equinor and Dutch energy company Eneco have signed a five-year agreement for the supply of natural gas to the Netherlands, strengthening energy security while supporting sustainability goals. Under the deal, Equinor will deliver up to 0.5 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas per year to Eneco via the Dutch gas grid, with deliveries starting from February 1 this year.

The agreement covers gas with a lower-than-average greenhouse gas footprint, reflecting the comparatively low emissions associated with production and transportation on the Norwegian continental shelf. In addition to physical gas deliveries, Equinor will transfer guarantees of origin, referred to as “sustainability qualities,” to Eneco through a platform operated by Attributes SAS. Eneco said the arrangement will reduce its reported carbon dioxide emissions by more than 10%.

Equinor’s Senior Vice President for Gas & Power, Helle Ostergaard Kristiansen, said the deal highlights how European energy companies increasingly view Norwegian gas as both a reliable and sustainable supply source. Eneco Chief Executive Officer Kees Jan Rameau said the agreement supports the company’s One Planet ambition of climate neutrality, while acknowledging that natural gas remains a necessary part of the energy mix during the transition.
