SEATTLE (Oil Monster):JERA Co., Inc., Japan’s largest power generation company, has signed a long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) sale and purchase agreement (SPA) with QatarEnergy to secure 3 million tonnes per year (tpy) of LNG for 27 years, with deliveries set to begin in 2028.

The agreement was formalized during the LNG 2026 Conference in Doha by JERA Global CEO and Chair Yukio Kani and QatarEnergy President and CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi. Under the terms of the SPA, LNG cargoes will be supplied on a delivered ex-ship (DES) basis from Qatar’s production facilities.

The deal strengthens a partnership spanning more than three decades and reinforces Qatar’s role in Japan’s energy security. Qatar previously provided emergency LNG supplies following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

With Japan’s electricity demand expected to rise due to expanding data centres and semiconductor manufacturing, LNG-fired power will remain critical. The agreement aligns with Japan’s Seventh Strategic Energy Plan, which recognizes natural gas as a key energy source beyond carbon neutrality, ensuring long-term supply security and portfolio diversification for JERA.
