SEATTLE (Oil Monster): A heads of agreement has been signed by Woodside Energy Group Ltd., a large energy firm based in Australia, and JERA Co. Inc. to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the Japanese power utility company during the winter months. The initial duration of the arrangement will be five years. The Scarborough Enbergy Project and other assets in Woodside's portfolio will provide the majority of the LNG.
The agreement states that, beginning in 2027, LNG will be delivered between December and February on an ex-ship basis. Approximately 200,000 metric tons will be delivered annually in three cargoes. The goal of the deal is to guarantee a steady supply of LNG throughout Japan's winter peak demand. It should be mentioned that LNG is still a vital fuel for the production of thermal power.
The deal was struck "under a company-to-company discussion framework for enhanced cooperation on energy security established by the Government of Japan and the Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC)," according to a press release from Woodside.
Woodside and Petroliam Nasional Bhd. recently inked a terms of agreement for the sale of one million metric tons per annum (MMtpa) of LNG over a 15-year period, with supply anticipated to start in 2028.
