SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has completed approximately 50% of construction on its new West-East crude oil pipeline. The pipeline will bypass the Strait of Hormuz, in addition to strengthening the country’s energy export capacity.

Sultan Al Jaber, chief executive of ADNOC, stated that work on the pipeline is progressing at a rapid pace and remains on track for completion by next year.

In its first public disclosure about the project last week, the Abu Dhabi Media Office had said the pipeline is crucial as it will significantly expand the UAE’s ability to transport crude oil through the port of Fujairah, located outside the Strait of Hormuz.

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed had called for faster delivery of the pipeline project during a recently held executive committee meeting. The construction was further accelerated following the directive.

The pipeline expansion comes at a time of mounting regional tensions after Iran restricted shipping access through the Strait of Hormuz following attacks on the country by the U.S. and Israel. The disruption has resulted in escalation of global energy prices.

Al Jaber noted that the existing Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline currently carries up to 1.8 million barrels per day. A few of its facilities have sustained damage in recent attacks, the repairs of which are expected to take weeks or even months.
