Looking ahead, the EIA expects U.S. crude oil production to remain strong, averaging 13.7 million b/d in 2026 before rising to 14.2 million b/d in 2027.

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The U.S. maintained its position as the world's leading crude oil producer in 2025, according to the latest data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). The U.S. crude oil production reached a new record during the year. The country has remained the top global producer since 2018.

Average U.S. crude oil production, including lease condensate, climbed to 13.6 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2025, surpassing the previous record of 13.2 million b/d achieved in 2024. The latest output was around 40% higher than production levels recorded by the world's second and third largest producers, Russia and Saudi Arabia.

The boosted U.S. output was mainly due to the continued expansion of shale oil production. The production jump was primarily driven by higher drilling efficiency and improved extraction technologies by producers. The increased production is despite the dip seen in average West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude prices from $77 per barrel in 2024 to $65 per barrel in 2025.

The Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico remained the country's largest producing region, accounting for nearly half of total U.S. crude output. Production from the basin increased by 4% during the year to approximately 6.6 million b/d.

Looking ahead, the EIA expects U.S. crude oil production to remain strong, averaging 13.7 million b/d in 2026 before rising to 14.2 million b/d in 2027.
