SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Türkiye has announced the official launch of a major energy infrastructure project to build a 101-kilometer subsea natural gas pipeline connecting the country with Northern Cyprus. The new pipeline is expected to strengthen the country’s energy security significantly.

The project follows the signing of cooperation agreements between Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The pipeline will stretch from Anamur in southern Türkiye to Teknecik in Northern Cyprus, with around 97 kilometers laid beneath the Mediterranean Sea and another 4 kilometers on land.

According to Türkiye's Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the system will feature two 22-inch pipelines capable of transporting natural gas in both directions. The project will feature supporting infrastructure, including gas import terminals. The bidirectional design of the pipeline is also expected to provide greater flexibility for future energy trade, allowing for natural gas flows from Northern Cyprus back to Türkiye.

The proposed pipeline is expected to help the country replace costlier liquid fuels currently used for electricity generation, thereby reducing energy costs substantially. Construction activities are expected to begin shortly following the approval of the agreements.
