MONTREAL (Oil Monster): Global commodities trader Trafigura has signed a $1.5 billion financing agreement supporting a new five-year natural gas supply contract with Germany's state-owned Securing Energy for Europe, or SEFE.
Trafigura will deliver 30 terawatt-hours of natural gas annually beginning November 1, for a total of more than 150 TWh through November 2031.
The gas will be sourced primarily from Trafigura's global portfolio.
Gas Supply Agreement
Annual volume: 30 TWh
Total supply: 150+ TWh
Start: November 1, 2026
Duration: Five years
Financing: $1.5 billion
New Contract Raises Annual Supply by About 30%
The agreement replaces an existing four-year Trafigura-SEFE contract that expires at the end of October.
That earlier arrangement supplied approximately 23 TWh of gas annually. The new 30-TWh commitment therefore increases annual contracted volumes by roughly 30%.
SEFE said the additional supply will strengthen its diversified procurement portfolio and support energy security in Germany and the broader European market.
German Government Backs the Financing
The financing is supported in part by a guarantee under Germany's Untied Loan Guarantee, or UFK, programme, administered through export credit agency Euler Hermes.
The UFK programme is designed to help secure long-term access to raw materials and strategically important commodities for the German economy by protecting financing against certain commercial and political risks.
A syndicate of nine banks arranged the facility, with KfW IPEX-Bank acting as facility agent and export credit agency coordinator and agent.
Participating lenders include Commerzbank, DBS Bank's London branch, DZ BANK, J.P. Morgan, Lloyds and Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation.

The financing ties commodity credit directly to physical energy security.
Germany is not simply financing Trafigura's balance sheet. The government-backed structure supports a specific long-term commitment to deliver larger volumes of gas into SEFE's European supply portfolio.
Agreement Comes as Germany Builds Its Winter Gas Buffer
The contract begins as Germany continues strengthening natural gas supply ahead of winter following unusually low storage levels earlier this year.
The German government recently instructed SEFE to procure and store an additional 8 TWh of natural gas by December 15 as an extra supply buffer.
The new Trafigura agreement serves a longer-term purpose, securing substantially larger annual volumes through 2031 rather than addressing only the immediate winter storage requirement.
Trafigura Extends German Commodity Financing Relationship
The transaction also builds on Trafigura's previous government-backed financing arrangements in Germany.
In 2022, the trader secured a $3 billion German-backed facility supporting gas supplies to SEFE. Earlier this year, Trafigura signed another $1.1 billion guaranteed loan supporting long-term supplies of critical metals to German industry.
The latest agreement extends that financing model through another five-year gas-supply commitment.
The Bottom Line
Trafigura's new agreement increases annual gas deliveries to SEFE from about 23 TWh to 30 TWh while locking in supply through 2031.
For Germany, the transaction provides another long-term source of diversified gas supply at a time when geopolitical disruption continues to make energy security a central concern.
