Roanoke Gas Renewable Natural Gas Project Gets State Approval

The equipment is expected to be commissioned in the next four to six weeks.

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The plan submitted by Roanoke Gas Co. to convert biogas from sewage treatment plant into natural gas has received approval from state regulators. The project, in partnership with the Western Virginia Water Authority, has received green light from the State Corporation Commission (SCC).

The plan submitted by Roanoke Gas Co. calls for installation of a large piece of equipment at the authority’s water treatment plant in Southeast Roanoke towards conversion of biogas into natural gas. The equipment is expected to be commissioned in the next four to six weeks. The project has the potential to increase local fuel supply, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and boost the utility’s profits.

The biogas, comprising of 63% methane and 37% carbon dioxide, will be pumped to tanks, where an advanced membrane separation system will be used to refine it to pipeline-quality natural gas.

The statement issued by the company said that it is pleased to be the first gas utility in Virginia to receive Commission approval of a renewable natural gas project. By ensuring locally produced supply of natural gas, the company expects the facility to protect its customers from significant price increases in future.
