SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Poland’s natural gas pipeline operator, Gaz-System, announced it will significantly increase its gas transmission capacity to Ukraine starting next month, a move designed to bolster the neighbouring nation’s energy security amid the ongoing Russian strikes on key energy infrastructure.

Scheduled to take effect from February through April, the capacity increase, which will raise the limit from 600,000 to 720,000 cubic meters per hour, provides a vital lifeline for Ukraine as it enters the final months of the winter heating season— a period when energy demand typically reaches its peak.

Gaz-System’s boost in transmission to Ukraine by 20% follows the successful modernization of a key metering station in Hermanowice, located near the Polish-Ukrainian border.

According to a news report published by Devdiscourse on Monday, January 19, Gaz-System’s officials confirmed that the technical upgrades were completed in December, allowing for the increased flow of gas.

The Hermanowice facility serves as a critical node in the energy corridor connecting Ukraine to Western European markets. The decision comes as Kyiv continues to grapple with persistent Russian missile and drone attacks targeting its electricity and gas production facilities.

These daily assaults have threatened Ukraine's domestic energy capabilities, leading to intermittent power outages and increasing the country’s reliance on imported fuel.

By expanding this transmission corridor, Gaz-System is reinforcing Poland’s role as a primary logistical hub for energy and humanitarian aid. Western allies have prioritized the stability of the Ukrainian power grid as a core component of their ongoing support.

Company officials stated that the modernization of the Hermanowice station is part of a broader effort to ensure regional energy independence and integrate Ukraine more closely with the European gas network.

The increased flow is expected to provide a necessary buffer against future infrastructure damage and domestic production shortfalls.
