SpaceX Plans 8-Mile Natural Gas Pipeline to Fuel Starship Launches at Texas Starbase

The proposed "Starpipe" pipeline would run from the Port of Brownsville to Boca Chica, delivering gas for on-site liquid methane production — and eliminating the fleet of tanker trucks currently required per launch.

MONTREAL (Oil Monster): A proposed SpaceX natural gas pipeline would stretch 8 miles from the Port of Brownsville to the company's Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas. The line would replace the massive fleet of tanker trucks currently hauling fuel to the launch site.

According to reporting by Reuters, the 16-inch pipeline — dubbed "Starpipe" — would deliver gas directly to Starbase for processing into liquid methane. The Rio Grande Valley Business Journal first surfaced details through public records from the Port of Brownsville and federal regulators.

Fuel for the Starship Era

Each Starship launch burns roughly 630,000 gallons of liquid methane. SpaceX currently moves that fuel by truck, requiring hundreds of trips per launch. The pipeline would eliminate that logistical burden entirely.

SpaceX filed engineering plans with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers last summer for a liquefaction facility at Starbase. Construction on the pipeline could begin in July 2026, Reuters reports. The system is expected to be in service by January 26, 2027.

The push for on-site fuel production comes as SpaceX accelerates its Starship flight cadence. The vehicle's most recent V3 test flight hit major milestones before ending in an ocean explosion, and the company has publicly set its sights on a crewed Mars flyby that would require a dramatically higher launch rate.

Crossing Sensitive Wetlands

The proposed route crosses Port of Brownsville property, wildlife refuge wetlands, and the new city of Starbase. The terrain is environmentally delicate but strategically positioned.

In late May, the Port of Brownsville Navigation District board approved a 30-foot-wide right-of-way easement for the project.

Environmental groups have already flagged concerns over the area's sensitive coastal habitat. Reuters also reports that land records show SpaceX has explored drilling near the site and elsewhere in Texas — suggesting the company may eventually produce its own gas rather than purchase it.

Scaling Up Launch Cadence

The FAA currently authorizes up to 25 Starship launches per year from Boca Chica. SpaceX has flown the vehicle 12 times since its maiden flight in April 2023. The company wants a pace that would make truck-based fuel delivery increasingly impractical.

Producing liquid methane on site is a step toward the rapid reusability model Elon Musk has described as essential for Mars missions. It also deepens SpaceX's footprint in South Texas, where the company's relationship with regulators and environmental advocates remains contentious.

Neither SpaceX nor the Army Corps of Engineers has publicly commented on the construction timeline.
