2030 Renewable Energy Target Promises Investments and Jobs in NSW

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): A new report published by Nature Conservation Council of NSW forecasts immense investment and job opportunities as the government renews its commitment to reach 100% renewable energy target by 2030. The report predicts $14 million in fresh investments in solar and wind power infrastructure and creation of nearly 22,000 clean energy jobs over the next decade.

According to the report, NSW lags in clean energy revolution when compared with the rest of the regions in the country. NSW gets most of its electricity from coal-fired power stations, which leads to emission of toxic gases. Estimates indicate that NSW gets only 6% of its electricity from solar and wind. On the contrary other regions have already made significant progress in clean energy solutions. For instance, Tasmania generates 90% of its power from clean sources. Also, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is all set to achieve 100% clean energy usage by 2020.

The report states that NSW could create 22,000 full-time jobs by moving to 100% clean energy. This includes 14,000 jobs in rooftop solar and the remaining 8,000 jobs in large-scale wind and solar. Also, there are 52 projects in development pipeline with an investment potential of around $11 billion. Transition to 100% clean energy could attract another $14 million investment in infrastructure enhancement.

NSW has to develop on existing resources to tap the potential of wind and sunshine to power homes and industries. By embracing clean energy, NSW would have access to cleaner, cheaper and more reliable electricity, the report says. It calls for active leadership from the NSW government in implementing fair and quick transition to 100% clean energy.
