South Carolina Regulators to Hold Hearing on Proposed Canadys Gas Power Plant

SEATTLE (Oil Monster):State regulators will hear public comments Monday on a proposal by Dominion Energy and Santee Cooper to build a new natural gas power plant at the site of a former coal facility in Colleton County, South Carolina.

The project, known as Canadys Station, is planned as an advanced combined-cycle generating plant and is currently under review by the South Carolina Public Service Commission. The hearing is part of the approval process, allowing community members to provide input.

Environmental groups have raised concerns over potential air pollution, citing a study commissioned by the Southern Environmental Law Center and conducted with the Harvard Data Science Initiative. The report warns that emissions of fine particulate matter could impact public health across the Lowcountry region.

However, Santee Cooper has challenged the study’s findings, arguing that it relies on outdated assumptions and non-EPA-approved modeling. The utility emphasized that the project will undergo a full environmental review.

Meanwhile, Dominion Energy maintains that the facility is essential to meet rising electricity demand and support South Carolina’s economic growth.
