City Lodged Legal Challenge Against LNG Terminal Project

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The City of Piombino, Italy has launched a legal challenge against the Italian government-backed liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal project in the Tuscan port.

In an appeal to the top administrative court, it forwarded a precautionary request calling for immediate suspension of work towards setting up the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), which in turn will connect it to the gas grid. The municipality urged the judges to provide a quick ruling on the matter.

The City, under the leadership of Mayor Francesco Ferrari, has been waging protests against the project, which they claim, poses serious risks to the safety of people in the locality, apart from threats to the environment as well as local businesses including fish-farming. The Mayor argued that safety concerns of the local community must be given top priority, despite the project being regarded as rewarding in the interests of the country.

The preliminary operations have already begun in Piombino, but construction works on the pipeline that connects the FSRU to the gas grid has not yet commence, said Snam, the country’s leading gas grid operator, who later decline to comment of the appeal made by the City against the project.
