Eni Launches Second Phase of Congo LNG Project Ahead of Schedule

SEATTLE (Oil Monster):Eni has initiated the second phase of its Congo LNG development earlier than expected, positioning the company to deliver the first LNG cargo from this stage in early 2026. The accelerated start comes after the arrival of the Nguya floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit and the successful introduction of gas into the newly built offshore infrastructure network.

Phase Two features a substantial expansion of offshore facilities, including three production platforms, the converted Scarabeo 5 unit for gas treatment and compression, and the Nguya FLNG vessel for liquefaction and export. The Nguya unit has a nameplate capacity of up to 3 million tonnes per year, equal to around 4.5 billion cubic metres of gas.

This setup enables Eni to efficiently develop reserves from the Nené and Litchendjili fields within the Marine XII licence, ensuring a coordinated supply of gas to both the Nguya FLNG and the existing Tango FLNG, which began operating in late 2023. The second phase was commissioned just 35 months after construction on the Nguya unit began.

Eni highlighted that much of the project execution took place in the Republic of Congo, employing local labour and strengthening the country’s industrial capabilities. Both the Nguya FLNG and the repurposed Scarabeo 5 incorporate low-emission technologies.

Eni continues to supply gas to the Centrale Électrique du Congo, which provides most of the nation’s electricity generation.
