Springs Utilities Installed Six Natural Gas Units at Martin Drake Plant

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The Colorado Springs Utilities completed installation of six natural gas generation units at the Martin Drake Power Plant. An event to mark the celebration was attended among others by Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers and other local community leaders.

The six natural gas units in Colorado Springs are the first of their kind in the entire North American region. The units are expected to have a positive impact on the Pikes Peak Region, mainly due to their low emissions and high reliability, noted General Electric. Meantime, Travas Deal, CEO, Spring Utilities stated that the units will use natural gas to generate electricity, which will in turn be delivered to homes.

The natural gas units are part of previously announced Sustainable Energy Plan by Springs Utilities, which aims to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by the end of the current decade. Moreover, the units would be time-efficient, as they have an eight-minute start-up time, when compared with 12 hours at the Drake Power Plant.

The units will soon be moved from the Drake plant to other parts of electric grid, said Springs Utilities. It must be noted that he decommissioning of the Drake Power Plant is scheduled to commence next month. The plant had closed in November last year.
