TransCanada Starts Operation of Topolobampo Gas Pipeline in Mexico

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): TransCanada started the commissioning of its Topolobampo gas pipeline with the capacity to transport 670 million cubic feet of natural gas daily to markets in the states of Chihuahua and Sinaloa.

The project represents an investment of approximately US $ 1.2 billion and provides the interconnection that supplies the Mazatlán gas pipeline, also from TransCanada.

The Topolobampo project involved the construction of approximately 560 kilometers of 30-inch-diameter pipelines from El Encino, near the city of Chihuahua, to Topolobampo, near Los Mochis, Sinaloa.

Together, the Topolobampo and Mazatlán gas pipelines make up a system that adds more than 870 kilometers of energy infrastructure that will play a fundamental role in providing natural gas to electric power plants and industrial and urban centers, promoting the economic development of the northwest region of Mexico.

The Topolobampo pipeline presented some of the most demanding construction challenges in the entire country, given the geography along the route, including crossing the Tarahumara sierra near the Copper Canyon in the state of Chihuahua.

TransCanada used techniques such as vertical drilling to cross steeply sloping cliffs and the need to use overhead cranes to transport the tubes to remote regions.

During its construction, the project employed about 3,500 employees and contractors and reached more than 10 million man-hours without incidents involving disabilities.
