Work Starts on £100M River Humber Gas Pipeline

SEATTLE (Oil Monster):  Tunnelling work has started on a £100M gas pipeline under the River Humber.

Work started on the 5km-long tunnel to connect the import terminal in Easington on the East Yorkshire coast to the national network last week.

A Skanska, Porr Bau and A. Hak joint venture was awarded the contract to design and construct the tunnel in May 2016, and Costain won the project services contract on the scheme. Work is expected to be completed by 2020.

The Humber Pipeline Project, which will link Paull to Goxhill, will replace an existing structure below the river bed that is at risk of being exposed by shifting tides. The new pipeline will be buried 35m underground.

The 160m long, 510 tonne tunnelling machine was named Mary, after the first female fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers Mary Fergusson OBE, by local primary school pupils.
