SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Turkey has begun work on a major natural gas pipeline connecting its southern coast with northern Cyprus. The project is expected to create a potential new supply route to Europe, strengthening regional energy security.
The planned pipeline will stretch approximately 101 kilometers, including a 97-kilometer offshore section beneath the Mediterranean Sea. Upon completion, the system is expected to transport up to 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually.

In its first phase, the pipeline will deliver natural gas from Turkey to northern Cyprus. However, Turkish authorities have outlined broader ambitions for the project. Plans call for the pipeline to operate in reverse, allowing natural gas produced in the Eastern Mediterranean to be transported through Turkey and onward to European markets.
Energy experts believe such a route could provide Europe with a more cost-effective alternative to imported liquefied natural gas (LNG). The future commercial gas discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean could be connected to the pipeline, thus strengthening Turkey's position as a key regional energy transit hub, officials noted.
Despite its economic potential and strategic advantages, the project continues to face significant geopolitical hurdles. The Republic of Cyprus is yet to recognize the self-declared administration in the north.
