SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Turkey has announced plans to complete a 97-kilometer subsea natural gas pipeline connecting the southern Turkish district of Alanya to Northern Cyprus by 2028. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the project will be signed between the two sides in June this year. The engineering works of the project are slated for end-2026 completion.
The announcement follows recent meetings between Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz and Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Unal Ustel.
The proposed pipeline is expected to strengthen regional energy security and expand future energy connectivity with Europe. Also, the project is anticipated to strengthen Turkey’s role as a regional energy transit hub.

Alparslan Bayraktar, Turkey’s Minister for Energy and Natural Resources said the pipeline project will support the growing energy needs of Northern Cyprus region, while reducing dependence on fossil-fuel-based energy.
According to Turkish officials, the natural gas pipeline will include a reverse-flow mechanism, enabling future Eastern Mediterranean gas discoveries to be transported from Northern Cyprus to Turkey and potentially onward to European energy markets.
The initiative marks a significant expansion of energy cooperation between Ankara and Northern Cyprus.
