EIA: U.S. Natural Gas Output Surged in 2023

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The most recent Natural Gas Monthly Report published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said that the natural gas production by the country surged higher by 4% during the previous year to average at 125.0 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). The production had recorded similar surge in 2022 as well.

According to the report, three regions—Appalachia, Permian, and Haynesville—accounted for 59% of all natural gas production in the United States.

The highest production came from the Appalachia region of the Northeast, accounting for 29%, or 37.7 Bcf/d, of gross natural gas production. However, lack of pipeline takeaway capacity and no new major pipeline capacity additions have slowed the production growth in the region.

The second-most U.S. natural gas producing region was the Permian in western Texas and New Mexico, which accounted for 19% of the total U.S. production. During the previous year, the gross natural gas production in the Permian averaged at 23.3 Bcf/d, recording rise by 2.6 Bcf/d, the report said.

Meantime, the Haynesville region, in Louisiana and Texas accounted for 13% of the gross U.S. natural gas production. The natural gas production growth in the Haynesville slowed in 2023 due to reduced rig activity in the region. The active rig count per month averaged at 49 during 2023, as compared with 55 active rigs in 2022.
