Asbestos-containing materials (ACM) effect the manner in which buildings are evaluated, managed, renovated or maintained.

The staff at Alpha Environmental Sciences is very knowledgeable and experienced in providing asbestos services. We perform state-of-the-art asbestos inspections, asbestos abatement engineering, industrial hygiene surveillance and air monitoring, and asbestos management plans. These services are performed and designed to meet a client’s specific needs. The asbestos inspection can be a part of the Phase I or Phase II environmental evaluation.

AHERA

The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) passed into law by Congress in October, 1987 required all nonprofit public and non-public schools Grades K-12 to be inspected for asbestos-containing materials (ACM).

Our AHERA survey experience encompasses some 100 million square feet of building space. Our inspection experience includes school buildings, universities, hospitals, industrial facilities, commercial buildings and a wide range of other facilities.

Asbestos Management Plan

The asbestos management plan is developed from the AHERA inspection. The management plan provides assessment of asbestos materials and an operation and maintenance (O & M) plan describing how to properly manage the asbestos while minimizing exposure risks. Information provided in the management plan is helpful to maintenance and custodial personnel when working around asbestos-containing materials (ACM). The operation and maintenance plan is designed to inform maintenance personnel how to properly handle fiber release episodes and what to do when it becomes necessary to disturb asbestos-containing materials.

Abatement Project Design

Alpha Environmental Sciences has a qualified staff of design professionals with disciplines in environmental and mechanical engineering. We will provide an accredited abatement designer who will prepare the plans and specifications, handle bid requirements including prebid meetings, bid solicitations, assistance in selection of the abatement contractor and contract documents preparation. During the abatement phase, we will make periodic site visits to assess the progress of the work. We will also review the contractor pre-submittals and final submittals.

Air Monitoring

The company provides air monitoring services during asbestos removal for quality assurance control and regulatory compliance purposes. On-site personnel are well trained, certified, and experienced in all aspects of asbestos control and management. Air samples are analyzed on-site using phase contrast microscopy (PCM). Alpha Environmental is enrolled in the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Asbestos Analyst Registry (AAR) program as part of our QA/QC program. All air monitoring technicians participate in quarterly proficiency testing for phased contrast microscopy (PCM) analysis. Alpha Environmental uses NVLAP accredited laboratories for analysis of clearance air samples by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).

Supervising Air Monitor

As required by various state regulatory agencies for large asbestos abatement projects, Alpha Environmental maintains a Supervising Air Monitor (SAM) accreditation. Our SAM is responsible for preabatement containment inspection and postabatement final visual inspection. He is also responsible for providing a written air monitoring program for these abatement projects as well as periodic site visits.
