History

Our company began in 1888, the year the U.S. Department of Labor was founded and the time-card clock was invented. And we have been laboring happily around the clock for our customers ever since!Back then, cutting and harvesting ice was one of the core industries in central Maine, as families tried to keep their perishables fresh longer. So we incorporated ourselves as the “Augusta Ice Company.” As the new century approached, “coal cubes” started replacing wood-burning stoves, so we expanded our market and our name to “Augusta Coal & Ice Company.”  By 1940, “power burners” were growing in use, fed by fuel oil and kerosene, so we added those fuels and changed our name to “Augusta Fuel Company.”  Fast-forward to 1970. Our growth allowed us to buy plumbing companies to expand our services, which caused a name change to “Augusta Fuel & Plumbing Company.”  In 1987, we added air conditioning and refrigeration services, and in 1997 we added propane delivery and equipment.  With environmental issues growing ever more important, in 2003 we added AFC ADVANTAGE premium fuel oil additive, which keeps equipment running at peak efficiency.  And in 2007 we expanded our propane facility to accommodate a 30,000-gallon storage tank.  In 2015, AFC started working out of the newly acquired Clinton Office, previously Weymouth’s Inc., located at 121 Mutton Lane in Clinton, Maine. This allowed up to expand our reach to further up North in Central Maine. Following in this move, in April 2016, AFC completed the acquisition of the fuel/propane and service segments of J&S Oil, Inc. of Manchester, Maine. We also acquired the office in Winslow. During both of these transitions, we retained the employees and many of their friendly faces can be seen in our three locations today.  Throughout all these service and name changes, AFC has done everything we can to offer the best fuel delivery and HVAC services in central Maine. With over 120 years of experience, we’re confident we can be the best home energy contractor for your family, too.

Oil & Kerosene

AFC has consistently been awarded “Augusta’s #1 Fuel Oil Delivery Company” by Market Surveys of America, thanks in part to our friendly, prompt service, competitive pricing and favorable terms and billing options.  We take providing you with the best quality Home Heating Fuel seriously. That is why we are committed to purchasing an adequate supply of fuel, safely maintaining our large storage facilities and passing those savings on to you, our customers. As of July 1, 2018, the State of Maine has required Fuel Oil & Kerosene to be Ultra -Low Sulfur. Now heating your home is even more efficient and cleaner for the environment.

Propane

Since 1988 AFC has been providing Propane to businesses and homes in Central Maine.  With over 60,000 gallons of storage in Augusta and the experience to back it up, choosing AFC is a smart, reliable choice.  Propane is efficient, safe, reliable and versatile—that’s why our customers use it to heat their homes, hot water, fireplaces and even swimming pools. We also install and provide fuel for gas ranges, clothes dryers, barbecue grills and whole-home generators.

Heating Service

Whether AFC has been your fuel provider, service provider or never done any work for you, we would love to help you make an informed decision about Natural Gas.  Our top goal is to make sure you feel comfortable with us!  Sean McCormick, our Senior Estimator with over 35 years of experience, will come do a thorough in-home visit to access your current system and talk to you about your homes’ needs. Sean will then provide a free written estimate that clearly outlines various options, from updating your current burner to installing a completely new system.
