About Company

Founded in 1997, the Colorado Energy Group (CEG) is a customer-focused strategic energy planning advisor to governments, utilities, homebuilders, developers and energy efficiency and renewable energy providers and suppliers. George Burmeister is the President of CEG. Headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, CEG has satellite offices in Stockton, CA, Dallas, TX and Washington, DC.   CEG is hired primarily for our energy efficiency and solar Best Practice implementation experience with industry and local and state governments, our writing skills, relationship-building and facilitation services, stakeholder engagement strategies, codes and standards knowledge, balanced Community Choice Energy (CCE) expertise, survey capabilities and our comprehensive clean energy technology policy expertise. We place a strong emphasis on voluntary, market-based solutions in the energy efficiency, renewable energy and natural gas areas.

Our Approach

is driven by the following core values: Colorado Energy Group (CEG) employees and our contractors subscribe to a core set of values—values that we do not, and will not, compromise. These core values define who we are and how we operate.

Respect

We respect all people—especially their opinions and their time. We believe in treating people as we want to be treated.

Integrity

CEG’s reputation for integrity is one of our most important corporate assets. We can only afford to associate with clients who place a comparable emphasis on integrity.

Communications Excellence We demand excellence across virtually every area of our business, and especially in our written and oral communications on behalf of our clients. We believe in the power of every written and spoken word and that written and spoken words are a direct reflection on our company and the clients we represent. Communications excellence is highly valued at CEG.  With more than 20-years in the industry, our reputation is built on effective, results-driven stakeholder collaboration. We are known for building successful local, regional and state energy-related collaboratives. We know who to involve, how to involve them and how to optimize their input without requiring too much of their (limited) time. Ever-changing elected and career officials, and the fast-paced nature of the renewable energy and energy efficiency markets demand superior collaboration skills—and we have them.

Sustainability

We believe in leading by example, and minimizing the carbon footprint associated with our business decisions. The majority of our work is climate change and/or carbon related, therefore, we choose to live and work with sustainability in mind. We consciously consider the environmental impacts of each corporate decision, and we work toward carbon neutrality.

Our Experience

The Colorado Energy Group (CEG) is led by its President George Burmeister. Headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, CEG was founded in 1997 in Washington, DC. CEG has satellite offices in Sacramento, CA, San Francisco, CA, Dallas, TX and Washington, DC.  The Colorado Energy Group is a customer-focused leading energy advisor to governments, utilities, homebuilders, developers and energy efficiency and renewable energy technology providers and suppliers. We are known for our strong emphasis on market-based solutions and for inspiring elected and senior career government officials to take extraordinary steps toward more sustainable policies and practices—especially in the natural gas, energy efficiency and renewable energy areas.  Mr. Burmeister is respected on both sides of the aisle, having served as a senior political appointee for U.S. President Bill Clinton between 1993 and 1996, and later serving as Communications Director of the Congressionally- created State Energy Advisory Board (STEAB) for the Bush Administration between 2002 and 2004. STEAB provides energy budget guidance to the Administration and Congress.  California’s major investor-owned utilities hired Mr. Burmeister to serve as informal energy staff to more than 120 of the busiest and fastest-growing local governments in California. In addition to helping them with green building and new residential construction issues, he advised these local governments and others on energy assurance, energy efficiency, renewable energy, natural gas, energy security and critical infrastructure protection (CIP) issues. He continues to advise many of these governments.  After his political appointment in the Clinton Administration and prior to leaving Washington, Mr. Burmeister served as Policy Director of the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) and Executive Director of Americans for Clean Energy (aka "the Solar Lobby") in Washington before returning home to Colorado in 1999. He helped manage the Energy Program at the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) for three years before that, worked for U.S. Senator Timothy E. Wirth (D, CO), was State Political Director for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Sierra Club, and he worked in private sector sales for a West German firm for seven years before that, working out of Breckenridge, Colorado. He has a BA in Environmental Studies with a Minor in Business Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas (1981), and a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Colorado (1989). He was voted Outstanding Masters Student by the faculty in 1989, and was one of only two students in his graduate program to Graduate with Distinction (Honors).
