Family History

Sam Y. Dorfman, Sr. immigrated to the U.S. with his family from Ukraine in the early 1900s.  Mr. Dorfman began his involvement in the burgeoning domestic oil industry in 1930 by founding Louisiana Iron and Supply Company with another Ukrainian immigrant, Sam Sklar. The business sold pipe and metal goods for the oil industry and occasionally traded pipe for interests in oil and gas wells. It wasnt long before the partners joined with an Italian immigrant, Joe Zeppa, and launched Delta Drilling Company, which grew into a world-wide drilling company with operations in the United States, South America, and Europe. It was one of the largest drilling companies in the United States at its height. They continued to grow their foothold in the oil industry by partnering with several of the leading producers of oil and gas properties in developments across a large part of the United States.    Sam Y. Dorfman, Sr. was married to Elizabeth Florsheim and a pillar of the community in Longview, Texas, taking an active part in many civic and charitable organizations. He worked tirelessly to help those in need, having experienced need early in his life. Tragically Mr. Dorfman was killed in an auto accident in 1957, whereupon the family took over the business and has continued to develop it as a legacy to their beloved patriarch.   â€‹  In 1959 the Dorfman Production Company offices were moved to Dallas, Texas. Today the Company is being run by Sams grandchildren, Grant and Stacey, and Mr. Greg New, P.E.

The prospective lessor should consider the following before signing a lease agreement:

  • If the lessee is an independent landman, ask what he intends to do with your lease. Independent lease people will assign your lease to a producing company of their choosing, not yours, and you will likely have no contact or relationship with that company until after the lease has been assigned.

  • If the lessee is a production company, check the references of the producing company. Do they have producing wells in your area? What is the companys violation/enforcement history with the responsible government agency (in Ohio, the Division of Mineral Resources Management; in Texas, the Texas Railroad Commission)?

  • Request references from landowners whose property the company has drilled on. Check them out. These references can give a good idea of what you can expect from the companys practices and operations.

  • Discuss the term of the lease. Ask when the company intends to drill.

  • Discuss where the well, storage tanks, access roads and pipelines will be placed. Some well locations may be site-specific for geologic reasons, but the other items should be subject to landowner approval. Pipelines should be buried below plow depth where it is practical to do so.
