What Is CNG?

CNG is an alternative gasoline thats made by compressing natural gas to less than 1% of its volume given standard atmospheric pressure. CNG consist mostly of methane, CNG is odorless, colorless and tasteless.   Natural gas powers more than 12 million vehicles on the road today. The average growth rate in the U.S. for CNG shows a 3.7% increase per year since 2000, as contrasted with a booming global growth rate of 30.6% per year.

  • Air Quality - Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is one of the cleanest burning alternative fuels available. Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) emit up to 30% less greenhouse gas.

  • Cost - The use of natural gas fuel reduces costs significantly for vehicle and fleet owners. Natural gas averages up to $1.50 less per gallon than diesel or gasoline (depending upon local markets).

  • Abundance - North America has at least a 120-year supply of natural gas, according to a June 2008 study. There have been huge natural gas reserves discovered since 2008 making for long term stability. There are more than 13 million NGVs worldwide, with about 112,000 on U.S. roads today. 25% of all new transit buses currently on order nationwide are natural gas-powered. While abundance remains for natural gas there is a possible for fewer production wells being drilled in the next few years causing a increase in a demand. In addition further drilling is not expected until the price of natural gas rise, however the savings and cost benefits are still very realizable even with a significant price increase as show below in the breakeven analysis.

  • Domestic - 98% of natural gas consumed in North America is domestically produced. Increasing use of NGVs reduces our dependence on foreign oil and enhances our nations energy security.

  • Vehicle Availability – Detroit Automakers and Truck Manufacturers are issuing CNG Ready OEM vehicles in the 2013 model year starting this fall. NGVs already serve more users than any other alternative fuel vehicle. In the United States, about 30 different manufacturers produce 100 models of light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles and engines.

  • Its Safe: Lighter-than-air compressed natural gas is nontoxic and disperses quickly. It has a higher ignition temperature than gasoline and diesel fuel, which reduces the chances of accidental ignition.

  • It Reduces Noise: Natural gas engines can reduce noise by as much as 50% compared to diesel engines.

  • It Can Be Renewable: Renewable natural gas—also known as biomethane or biogas—is a model alternative fuel. Produced from animal and crop waste and sewage, landfills and naturally occurring peat bogs and swamps. Methane is amazingly simple to produce, handle and use as a fuel.
